Homeopathy is a medical discipline whose primary emphasis is that, it is a non-invasive form of therapy. It is economical, safe, employing exclusively non-toxic remedies or medicines. It may be used to treat both acute and chronic disorders. However, it greatest utility lies in its successful treatment of many chronic illnesses that are usually difficult to manage with other therapeutic methods.
The discipline of homeopathy entails a holistic approach and treats the patient's disturbances on the emotional, mental, and physical levels in an integrated manner. It's aim is to restore the patient to health on these levels by stimulating and strengthening the intrinsic defense and curative mechanism (the Vital Force or the Vis Medicatrix Naturae).
Homeopathy was introduced in the 18th century by the German Physician and scholar Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, M.D. and since its inception almost 200 years ago has emerged as an important therapeutic discipline during the latter half of the 19th century in Europe and North America . It was widely accepted in Europe and was used by all the European Nobility including England's Royal Family (for over 160 years) and continues to be used today. The late Queen Mother who lived over 100 years, primarily used homeopathy prescribed by the physician to the Royal Family.
The term homeopathy is derived from the Greek words "Homeos", meaning "similar" and "Pathos", meaning "disease" (i.e., "similar disease" or "similar suffering").
Homeopathy is a system of medicine that treats a disease with very minute quantity of specially prepared remedies that will produce the same symptoms as the disease. The fundamental principle is that "like cures like". The first law of cure was in fact the Law of Similars, "Similia Similibus Curentur," In other words "let likes be treated by likes" known as the "Law of Cure" an old concept dating back to the days of Hippocrates. This Law of Similars, re-discovered by Dr. Hahnemann, is still the foundation of the practice of homeopathy today. According to Dr. Hahnemann, a medicine or remedy will cure a patient if their total set of symptoms corresponds exactly to the symptoms produced by the same medicine or remedy when given to a healthy person.
Homeopathic medicines or remedies are derived form the animal, vegetable and mineral kingdoms and also chemical substances. Remedies are given to promote the healing through the body's "Vital Force" as previously described.
Homeopathy is well accepted as a safe and effective alternative form of medical treatment. There are no unwanted side-effects and it is not addictive. It can be used for babies, children and elderly people.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has also recognized homeopathy as a viable form of therapy.
The late Prime Minister of India, Mahatma Gandhi stated that;
"Homeopathy cures a larger percentage of cases than any other method of treatment and is beyond all doubt safer and more economical and the most complete medical science."
There are a surprisingly large number of clinical trials (over 200) that have been completed using statistical analysis and have concluded that Homeopathy does work when compared to the placebo effect (ref. Dr. Peter Fisher MD, Physician to Queen Elizabeth II, Clinical director of the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital, part of the University London College Hospital, London, England).
Countless numbers of individuals have been successfully treated by homeopathy and are living proof of the efficacy of this healing discipline.
